Amidst all the accolades to New York firefighters and tributes to all the heroism demonstrated by them and so many others on that horrible day one year ago, Americans should also take time to refocus on the fact that we are at war, and on the people we are at war with.

The people with whom America is at war are Arab Moslems. Here's the syllogism: Not all Arab Moslems are terrorists – but all the terrorists who attacked America a year ago were Arab Moslems. All the people who danced on the streets of Cairo and Beirut and Nablus celebrating the death of thousands of Americans in that attack were Arab Moslems.

I have not forgotten and I have not forgiven. It was Arab Moslems who did this to us. And not kooky hyper-fringe Islamic nuts – an Arab equivalent of Timothy McVeigh – but Moslems who represent an ancient and revered tradition stated clearly in the Koran: that Mohammad advocates and Allah encourages Moslems to slaughter infidels.

Isn't it time now to acknowledge that the Arab Moslem suicide pilots of September 11 and the Arab Moslem suicide bombers in Israel are carriers of the same moral virus deeply embedded in the soul of Arab Islam?

Isn't it time to recognize that the fault for and cause of the poverty, pestilence, illiteracy and dictatorship endemic to the Arab world is the way Arabs interpret and practice their religion?

Isn't it time to – for at least just this once – abandon political correctness, stop apologizing for our accomplishments, and proudly proclaim to the world that 21st century Western Civilization is morally superior to a culture still stuck in the Dark Ages of the seventh century?

All men may be created equal, but all cultures are not. Cultures can possess defects that are quite similar to those found in biological species. Such a defect in the latter are called genetic defects or genetic flaws that render a species incapable of surviving in its environment – and thus it becomes extinct.

Cultures possess the equivalent of genes. The term "meme" was coined by Oxford zoologist Richard Dawkins. Memes are cultural genes, the social equivalent of chromosomal genes. A gene is a set of instructions for making (mostly) proteins, stored in cell nuclei and replicated through sexual reproduction. A meme is a set of instructions for making belief or behavior patterns, stored in the neuronal pathways of people's brains and replicated through imitation.

As in a physical genome, there can be flaws in a cultural genome, or memome, which renders it dysfunctional and unable to flourish healthily. If these flaws overwhelm the culture's capacity to compete with other cultures, the culture will cease to exist – it will become extinct.

The life-or-death issue Arabs face today is whether the memetic flaws in their culture have reached critical mass, dooming their culture to extinction – or whether they still have time to correct their defects and culturally survive.

These flaws are deep and dramatic. Two of the most prominent are an interpretation of the words of Mohammad as unchangeably and inflexibly embedded in stone, and a massive inferiority complex toward the West in general and Judaism in particular. A third is a pathological fear of women.

Unless these three memetic defects are corrected and effectively eliminated from Arab culture, that culture faces quick extinction.

In evolutionary biology, variation of traits within local populations of a species is what enables a species to evolve and thus avoid extinction. Most often, it is selection of positive traits in the peripheral, not the mainline, populations that provides the survival key.

There are numerous local cultures within the Arab world. Some are mainline and dominant, such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Palestinians. Others are peripheral and small, such as Bahrain and Qatar. The hope for the survival of Arab culture lies with these peripheries. They are the societies that are taking chances, breaking out of the memetic straitjacket that holds the majority of Arabs in dysfunctional bondage.

Clearly, the straitjacket most tightly wrapped around any Arab society is that worn by Saudi Arabia. Clearly, Saudi Arabia, whence came Osama bin Laden and the majority of the September 11 terrorists, is a dying culture with no future except cultural oblivion.

Oblivion is now the most likely fate of Arab culture as a whole – save for those peripheral outliers that are busy morphing into pro-West, pro-capitalist, pro-freedom (for men and women) societies capable of evolving Islam out of the seventh century and into the 21st.

In fact, it now may be the case that the only means by which Arab culture as a whole can avoid such oblivion is if George W. Bush takes out Saddam Hussein.

Eliminating the evil of Saddam from the Arab world is a necessary condition – just as necessary as eliminating the evil of al-Qaeda – for Arab culture to have any chance for survival.

It is not a sufficient condition. Arabs have to find the moral strength within themselves to overcome their envy of the West, their envy of the Jews, and their fear of women. They may not be able to do so and may go culturally extinct anyway – but they don't have any chance at all with Saddam and Osama drooped like spiritual albatrosses heavily over their souls.

Some 1300 years ago, a horde of Arab nomads appeared out of a desert nowhere to conquer all the Middle East, North Africa and southern Spain. Such conquering hordes had appeared before, like the Huns from Central Asia, and would appear again, like the Mongols of Genghiz Khan. The Arab horde, however, had the prescience to invent a religion to justify its conquest and force it down the throats of the conquered (see "The Myth of Mecca").

That invention, and the inertia of that conquest, has now run its course. The page of the historical atlas is turning for the Arabs. The monstrous insanity of September 11 bears hideous testimony to the fatal flaws of Arab Moslem culture. It is hard to see how those flaws, those memetic defects, can be corrected in time before that culture vanishes into the historical past.
