Sen. Hillary Clinton personally intervened with Sen. Joe Biden to stop the Delaware Democrat from rescuing ailing 98-year-old Strom Thurmond from a fatiguing floor debate on Monday, an ordeal some feared might cause the South Carolina Republican to collapse -- or worse.

"This is disgusting," a Republican aide told the Washington Times Wednesday. "This is the lowest form of politics, when you´re actually trying to exhaust senators into their graves in the hopes of gaining the majority."

Biden sought to relieve the weary Thurmond, who by several accounts looked visibly unwell, by striking a deal where they'd both leave the Senate floor, cancelling out each other's vote on the important budget amendments at hand.

But when Mrs. Clinton learned of Biden's kind gesture, she warned, "Joe, you're going to miss thirty votes" -- then tried to blame the prolonged session on Republicans.

Clinton prevailed, along with two other Democrats who echoed her arguments, and Thurmond was forced to endure the full debate.

Biden did his best to exonerate the former first lady from charges she was attempting a political rubout that would have tossed the Senate to Democratic control.

"She said something to me about it but it wasn't to beat up on Strom," Biden told the New York Post.

Despite Mrs. Clinton's best efforts, Thurmond survived the evening.

Hillary Steamrollers Strom

Media-hungry freshman senator Hillary Clinton was so anxious for some TV face time after President Bush gave his State of the Union address last Tuesday, she nearly knocked over her 98-year-old colleague, Strom Thurmond.

Sen. Hillary reportedly made a beeline for a camera crew from NBC's New York affiliate, careening into the fragile South Carolina Republican in the process.

"Thurmond stumbled and nearly fell down," congressional sources told the American Spectator Online. Sen. Ted Kennedy caught the elderly gent before he hit the floor.

The ex-first lady apparently remained oblivious to her hit and run. But several witnesses noticed the incident, the Spectator said.

Thurmond has been in ill health lately and the betting is he won't live out his term.

Democrats are said to have him on a death watch, salivating at the prospect that one less Senate Republican will tip the body into Democratic control.

Perhaps Hillary just wanted to hurry things along.
