Laura Bush seems to be coming into her own as first lady - especially in contrast to her predecessor.

Not only does a new poll show her outshining Hillary Clinton, but in little-noticed remarks last week, the demure Texan actually made fun of Mrs. Clinton's megabucks book deal.

Addressing the National Press Club about the fears she'd experienced since Sept. 11, Mrs. Bush took time out for some comic relief with this answer to a question about whether she intended to write a book about her experience.

"I guess it'll be whether or not I can get that $8 million advance." The audience roared with laughter.

The rest of America also seems to appreciate the new first lady's light touch after Hillary's eight years of power grabbing and money grubbing.

Fifty-six percent of those surveyed told a Fox News Dynamics poll that Bush fits the image of what a first lady should be. Only 26 percent said Hillary lived up to their ideal.

And in more bad news for Sen. Clinton, the Fox survey shows her favorability rating actually going down in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks. Though she's been on TV more often than ever before, touting her efforts to help New York City recover, her favorability rating has slid to just 44 percent.

That's a 12-point decline from Mrs. Clinton's January high of 56 percent.
