SOME OF MY FAVORITE CATALOGS
EQUIPMENT & FERTILIZERS, ETC. CATALOGS
GARDENS ALIVE!, 5100 Schenley Place, Lawrenceburg, Indiana 47025. 1-812-537-8650. Remarkable organic products that I use all the time. A complete source of some of the finest and hardest to find items. I feel this catalog is nearly irreplaceable in my nearly pesticide free garden. This year, 2002, has this company doing something revolutionary. They will now do sophisticated laboratory analysis of your soil samples and then will mix fertilizer and amendments for your exact soil compositon. In fact, since your soils can vary around your property you may wish to have even more specific mixes for various areas of your property. Research has shown that this is more important than any other step in optimizing your soils for plant growth. Plant growth can increase over 150% over simply using standard fertilizers. They are investing heavily in equipement for all this small batch custom mixing of over a dozen components as specified by your particular soils needs. This is a revolutionary advance in horticulture and deserves your attention. I wish them great success with this extraordinary service.
GARDENER'S SUPPLY COMPANY, 128 Intervale Road, Burlington, VT 05401-2804. PHONE:1-800-863-1700 A super company that test their own products on their own staff before they add them to their catalog. There is a lot to love here.
Plantskydd Animal Repellent This is the only herbivorous animal repellent I've ever used that absolutely works. It stops deer, rabbits, elk and probably elephants from eating your plants. Before I used this blood based product I tried everything else and the deer thought it was the "flavor of the week" as they adapted. They don't like the taste of blood in their salad evidently because my rose garden, hosta and lilies are now without a bite anywhere. And more amazing still is it only takes a few drops on the leaves to repel deer. There's no need to drench the plants with nasty bitter repellents that blow back on you and ruin your dinner. In addition to being non-toxic, the maroon spots fade away over the course of a week or so and what's more the plants use the stuff as a foliar fertilizer! Seriously, what more could you ask for? I've used it for over a year in a heavily deer infested area and my garden is gorgeous again so I went out and bought a gallon of the concentrate! In Oregon the Christmas tree farms use it and only spray every six months--it lasts that long in rain and sun. However, on fast growing garden plants like roses once every few weeks worked best for me. You'll find store locator links on the website. YOU'LL LOVE IT!!!
Spray-N-Grow, P.O. Box 2137, Rockport, Texas 78381. phone: 1-512-790-9033. One of the most amazing products to stimulate plant growth on the market. This stuff is incredible. I highly recommend it.
MAYBERRY SALES & SERVICE, INC., 232 Main Street, Port Murray, NJ 07865. PHONE: 1-800-696-1745. I found this company by hunting on the internet. I called them and the owner, Don Mayberry was on the phone. Direct and old fashioned "just folks" talking over the fence. They sell the HONDA HARMONY MINI-ROTOTILLER, the only one on the market with a FOUR STROKE ENGINE. This machine does everything the Mantis does but COSTS THE SAME and is FAR QUIETER and has NEGLIGIBLE SMOKE (none that I can see), is FAR EASIER TO START than a two stroke, and USES REGULAR GAS. They told me that when THEIR CUSTOMERS TRIED IT THEY BOUGHT IT TWENTY TO ONE OVER THE MANTIS. Their website is the only one on the net that compares the Mantis, Honda, and Troy-Bilt Mini-Tillers. This is just the right size for a normal sized home garden and is so quiet that the neighbors won't complain. It is much quieter that the leaf blowers even at it's loudest. You'll love this machine. I ran it through a year's worth of some of the roughest soil you could imagine and it came through with flying colors. It does things my old 5 HP Troy-Bilt couldn't begin to accomplish such as digging holes for trees and shrubs, digging out boulders (really!), and it does a great job creating fine tilth planter beds TWICE as deep as any of the big tillers. It is incredibly fast at mixing in soil amendments such as composted manure I use before each planting. One thing though. It only comes with "bolo-tines" similar to the Troy-Bilt. These are practically useless in heavy digging and clog with stones often. Buy the optional "digging tines" and remove the "depth" attachment and you'll have a tool that resembles a chain saw for the soil!
Lee Valley Tools, Ltd., P.O. Box 1780, Ogdensburg, N.Y. 13669-6780. PHONE: 1-800-871-8158. A catalog that has gradually getting better and better over the years to the point that I finally decided to include it in the list. Their seed starter is fancier than Gardener's Supply Company's but I prefer to use the 40 cell APS from Gardener's Supply. The Lee Valley one only has 24 cells. Otherwise I like this catalog.
A.M. LEONARD, INC., 241 Fox Drive, P.O. Box 816, Piqua, OH 45356. PHONE: 1-800-543-8955. How about a leaf blower that will blow leaves to the next block? HEAVY PROFESSIONAL EQUIPMENT HERE. GET THIS CATALOG AND CHECK IT OUT.

EDIBLE LANDSCAPING, 361 Spirit Ridge Lane, P.O. Box 77, Afton, VA 22920. PHONE: 1-800-524-4156. FAX: 1-804-361-1916. I just checked this link and for some reason it's down. For questions about their products call them at 1-804-361-9134. This company has a unusual selection of plants for your landscape. Specifically, all their stock has edible parts. In addition, the authors of this website have very considerately included detailed care information on their plants and even maps showing your USA Hardiness Climate Zones. They include some of their customer comments as suggestions. Check out their Citrus page which is excellent. They even have the hard to find LIMEQUAT too! Haven't ordered from them yet but I probably will soon!
Aesthetic Gardens, P.O. Box 1362, Boring, Oregon 97009. FAX: 503-663-6672. You will receive a toll free telephone number after your order is received. Aesthetic Gardens is a collective group of growers in the Portland, Oregon and Washington area. They are unusual in several ways. There is no print catalog, just an excellent website. The website represents a group cooperative of nurseries, and the many rare plants they offer come from nurseries that specialize in that particular plant. They get rave reviews on their packing and delivery of highest quality plants as well. Check out their amazing selection of thornless blackberries for example. There are more varieties here than any other source I've come across. These include many that just came into the market from Scotland. Worth a try!
PACIFIC TREE FARMS, 4301 Lynwood Drive, Chula Vista, CA 91910, PHONE: 619-422-2400. AND FAX: 619-426-6759. This catalog is a great source for new and rare plants and trees. One of these is a favorite of Martha Stewart (take an antacid when I mention her name) called the LIMEQUAT (FORTUNELLA JAPONICA X CITRUS AURANTIFOLIA). It's like a Kumquat that is Lime flavored and is really different.
DUTCH GARDENS, P.O. Box 200, Adelphia, New Jersey 07710-0200. PHONE: 1-800-775-2852. I like the pictures in this catalog and the quality is good.
ANTONELLI BROTHERS BEGONIA GARDENS, 2545 Capitola Road, Santa Cruz, California 95062. phone: 1-831-475-5222. I am fortunate to live over the hill from this remarkable nursery. They literally produce the best begonias in the world. Butchart gardens gets their begonia seed exclusively from Antonelli's. They also have over a hundred varieties of fuchsias and have a mail order business. I was there in April for mother's day and got liner sized fuchsias for a buck each! Incredibly knowledgeable staff that were very helpful. They are unique and have my highest recommendation.
PINETREE GARDEN SEEDS, Box 300, New Gloucester, ME 04260. PHONE: 207-926-3400. I have ordered from this catalog many times. They are special in that they sell much smaller amounts of seed per packet at very modest prices. Their prices are probably the lowest you'll find but the quality remains very good. They are 23 years old as of 2002 and also have a variety of other plants, bulbs, and products at similarly excellent values. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS LITTLE COMPANY.
SEEDS OF CHANGE, P.O. Box 15700, Santa Fe, NM 87506-5700. PHONE: 1-888-762-7333. A very hip and politically correct, organic source for some unusual vegetables. For example are pumpkins grown specifically for the seeds. A little pricey but when you want something different you may find it here.

PARK SEED COMPANY, INC., 1 Parkton Ave., Greenwood, SC 29647-0001. PHONE: 1-864-223-7333. Park Seed was started by George W. Park in 1858 and it's been run by family ever since. As far as packing the seeds they are absolutely the best with their "Parkspack".The seeds are packed in foil sealed envelopes that preserve the seeds in ideal condition for years. The prices and selection are very good. They seem to get first dibs on most of the newest and best hybrids and cultivars. I've ordered from them since childhood.
WAYSIDE GARDENS, 1 Garden Lane, Hodges, South Carolina 29695-0001. 1-800-845-1124. This company is owned by Park Seed Company. It tends to be expensive by there are many fine plants here. Some are simply seed grown from the Park catalog. Nice descriptions.

MINGUS DAHLIAS, 7407 N.E. 139TH ST., VANCOUVER, WA 98662, 360-573-2983, E-mail: pjmingus@pacifier.com I visited Mr. Mingus this last summer ('02) and enjoyed the old time small fields for his production. It's the total opposite of the huge Swan Island and Connell dahlia operations. He has peacocks to pick off the bugs from the tops of the plants and Seabright chickens running the rows to pick off the little bugs and slugs at ground level. Very organic and it's a wonderful stroll through the blooms all carefully staked in the rows in late summer. The plants he showed me were often 5 and 6 feet tall (!) and he said that those were the ones being shipped this season. Nice folks, nice dahlias too!
Brent and Becky's Bulbs, 7463 Heath Trail, Gloucester, VA 23061, Telephone: (804) 693-3966, FAX: (804) 693-9436. This is a very well regarded bulb source with good prices and generally excellent service.

Excellent catalog and first rate stock, big husky rhizomes that often loom the first season. They have an outstanding breeding program and have wonderful new iris varieties yearly. SEQUOIA NURSERY, 519 East Noble Ave., Visalia, CA 93292, PHONE: (559)-732-0309, FAX: (559) 732-0192 This is Ralph Moore's Miniature Rose Nursery as well. Ralph is one of the great legendary figures in the rose world because he developed the miniature rose as we know it today. His brilliant mind has also created several other classes of roses including the groundcover roses, the one and only true yellow Rugosa called Topaz Jewel, and so many other varieties I couldn't begin to list them all. He's owned the nursery since1937, over 65 years doing careful genetic crossing to offer you some of the most useful and beautiful roses anywhere. And besides all that, anyone who knows him will tell you that he's also one of the kindest and most energetic 96 years olds in the world! In addition I've found they even have the INCREDIBLE SAM MCGREDY'S HAND PAINTED ROSES too from New Zealand.!
REGAN NURSERY, 4268 DeCoto Road, Fremont, CA 94555. PHONE: 1-800-249-4680. I have to say a few things special about this unusual ROSE nursery. THIS IS THE GOURMET OF THE ROSE SUPPLIERS. Expert rosarians will recognize the names that follow: FRED EDMUNDS (he's unusual because he grafts onto Rosa Multiflora rootstock instead of the usual Dr. Huey for a more vigorous plant. Actually Phil Edmunds, Fred's son, is now running the business for his dad. PICKERING and HORTICO from Canada, MEILLAND STAR from France. RALPH MOORE'S hybrids are here including his stock of miniatures and large roses from his Sequoia Nursery in Visalia, California. I am proud to have had him stay overnight in my home-HE LITERALLY INVENTED MINIATURE ROSES! NOR'EAST MINIATURE ROSES (Harm Saville's hybrids), WEEKS (OLLIE WEEKS out in Ontario, California grows and sells millions of roses a year) I buy my roses here. Good stock, BAREROOT, and good prices. HEIRLOOM ROSES 24062 NE Riverside Drive, St. Paul, Oregon 97137. Phone: 503-538-1576. FAX: 503-538-5902. This is a very unusual rose company! It is the ONLY large rose nursery that grows their roses on their own roots and ships any time of the year. In addition it GUARANTEES virus free roses. Their catalog is absolutely luscious with the emphasis on disease resistance, vigor, and FRAGRANCE! In my own gardens when choosing roses the first thing I choose is ALWAYS fragrance. There are few roses wonderful enough to include in my gardens if they are not fragrant. Pristine is not fragrant but melts your heart with its porcelain blushed beauty. This company's catalog is a MUST HAVE!
S &W Greenhouses,, P.O. Box 30, 533 Tyree Springs Road, White House, Tennessee 37188, Phone: (615) 672-0599, Fax: (615) 672-1788 In the winter of 2003 I ordered several roses from this company and added a few at various times by telephone. It seems I always reached the same guy with a strong but pleasant Tennessee accent. He had a complete knowledge of his stock to the point he could tell me how many of which roses he had left....and he did it from memory! He was helpful and I wish I knew his name...Well anyway, the roses he sent from S&W Greenhouses were the best grafted bareroot roses I've received that year. And they were on time with huge roots, thick stems and they all grew vigorously. And they also were dual tagged with a metal AND a picture card that I still can easily read. Excellent service, excellent product. Catalog? Check out their website.
Amity Heritage Roses, Mr. and Mrs. Tracy and Janet Sclar, PO Box 357, Hydesville, CA 95547 TandJ@AmityHeritageRoses.com message phone: 707-768-2040. Lots of outstanding roses that are not common in commerce anymore but of fine garden value, such as the rose, "Irish Elegance".
Vintage Bloomers This is the website of a lovely young lady named Robin Lowe (nee: Robin Delargy) who lives in Tacoma, Washington and who adores roses. In fact, she loves them enough that her hobby became a nice little business propagating and selling roses. She knows her roses and is propagating several I'm interested in...hmmm, do I have any room left???

THOMPSON & MORGAN, INC., P.O. Box 1308, Jackson, NJ 08527-0308. PHONE: 1-800-274-7333. One of my favorite catalogs! This catalog is always amazing and gets my highest recommendation. Thousands of seed varieties well preserved in foil, wax paper, or paper depending on the requirements of that particular seed. I've grown the rare Wintersweet from seed to flowering (in the middle of winter!) five years later. This is the only catalog that has it. Dozens of Sweet Pea varieties, most of the Passiflora species and hybrids, and much more. The service is fast too. An old English company that operates in America and around the world.
J. L. HUDSON, SEEDSMAN, Star Route 2, Box 337, La Honda, California 94020. Hudson seeds are one of the Grand-daddies of the plant resource world having been around since the early 1900's. Like Thompson & Morgan, if it's something rare you want, look here. But unlike T&M there is a wealth of unusual knowledge and comments on it's no frills, no color pictures, recycled paper catalog. I've gotten the catalog some years for no other reason than to have a good read. They are one of the only sources for Gibberellic Acid-3 which is legendary for it's effects on seedling plants, grape maturation, and other aspects of plant propagation. A friendly reader of this page turned me on to their brand new website. Like the catalog, it's a no-nonsense approach, very few gif images. It's textual information and mouthwatering rare seeds. I've been one of their fans since my early college years and can recommend them without hesitation.

RAINTREE NURSERY, 391 Butts Road, Morton, Washington 98356. PHONE: 1-360-496-6400. DO YOU LIKE EDIBLE LANDSCAPING? I requested it originally because it had a good selection of Fig trees. Then I found out that it has THE MOST WIDE RANGING SELECTION OF ALL TYPES OF FRUITING TREES AND SHRUBS OF ANY CATALOG I've come across. They also have the "LIMEQUAT" plus many other rare and interesting plants that will feed you and decorate your yard too! JUST READING THE CATALOG IS AN EDUCATION. GET THIS CATALOG! A short story about Morton, Washington: It has a long lake bordered on each side by mountains with Dog Mountain at the Morton end. I went to the top of Dog Mountain with a Navy friend and watched as he and bunch of other guys went hang gliding way out over the lake. The only reason that they came down was for lunch. It was a sublime day.

Their catalog is gorgeous and full of information. Even over the telephone these are some of the most knowledgeable "Plantsmen" you will encounter outside of garden clubs. And for those of us in milder climes than Connecticut, there is now also a wonderful catalog for "Southern Gardeners". Expensive, fine quality, unusual.

SHEPHERD'S GARDEN SEEDS, 30 Irene Street, Torrington, Connecticut 06790. PHONE: 1-860-482-3638. Very much in the same line of thinking as the Cook's Garden catalog. Lot of varieties from other pats of the world. Selected flowers as well. More politically correct than Cook's which is why I like the Cook's catalog better. Cook's is also less expensive. But I'm including it here because they are a worthy alternative.
Good Scents-The Davidson-Wilson Greenhouse Davidson-Wilson Greenhouses, Inc., Rt2, Box 168, Crawfordsville, Indiana 47933-9426. 1-877-SCENT34. This catalog has an excellent selection of scented, fancy leaf, and many other geraniums. In addition it has a good selection of Begonia and other greenhouse plants and lots of mints and other herbs not commonly found. The pictures are very good of each plant. But my favorite is the group picture. 5 lovely grandmothers own and run this business. They must love it. The are both a commercial wholesale and retail business with NO minimum order.

ASHDOWN ROSES, P.O. Box 308, Landrum, SC. 29356, (864) 468-4900. I received their first catalog. It's an enthusiastic and artistic effort with some good pictures. A lot of "insider" chatter and in many cases uninformative descriptions in a large glossy "Madison Avenue" sales style format. In addition, when you get their catalog they also will send you a paper called the Ashdown Gazette with news about their business. The expense of this effort in printing makes me think they want to succeed in business. Also he may have Climbing Margo Koster, rare!

I visited this wonderful garden/nursery in February 2003 when everything was "down" for the winter. It's a beautiful rolling site of varied gardens heavily planted with choice small to mature specimens. A couple of plants that impressed me on the cold, misty day I visited: the Edgeworthia crysantha was fragrant and outstandingly unique in its' branching structure. In winter this is a sculptural gem! Also the Acanthus mollis, "Aureum" which I expected to be dormant was a yard by a yard and just glowing in spite of the grayness of the day. Just gorgeous, a "must have" plant! The folks there were friendly and helpful and recommended a visit in May/June and early fall. This place is a rustic paradise.Brushwood Nursery is a small, family owned and run nursery in southeastern Pennsylvania.
