Braun M880 Multimix 4-in-1 Handmixer
Here is the choice that I made. In the article on comparing the hand mixers the author assessed an older model with 220 watts. The new model sports a 280 watt motor which you'll notice in the information to follow on it. This is, no doubt about it, the best for the money.

Equipped with an exceptionally powerful 280-watt motor, this versatile appliance is a combination hand mixer and hand blender. For mixing, beating, and whipping, there are two cunningly designed beaters that produce volume while reducing splashing. For kneading, there's a strong dough hook, and for blending, there's an attachment that can be used in the accompanying 2-cup container (or any container) for small jobs like salad dressings. For chopping, the power unit attaches to another container with its own blades to make quick work of nuts, onions, hard cheeses, herbs, garlic, and meats. (The container's base serves as a snap-on plastic lid for storage.) The mixer/blender has three speeds and a power-pulse button for working through tough jobs. It stands upright on a nonskid base, and its power cord pivots to stay out of the way or can be locked in place. This appliance carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred BrackHere is some more information about it that I've gleaned: 3 speeds: 450 / 700 / 950 r.p.m. plus pulse for mixer; 10,000 r.p.m. for the blender. It also has motor overload protection and a safety system for tool ejection. According to some it is also wall mountable too. Try that with your KitchenAid stand mixer! And it's rated as VERY QUIET. This is a real advantage compared to most of them which sound like a circular saw.
You can purchase this from Amazon.com at the best price I've located. Plus there are several other sites that offer it now that didn't when I researched it and purchased mine. I've had it about 2 years now and it's still surprising my wife and I with how well it works. Whipping eggs with this machine happens so fast that it easily outdoes our big mixer! A real triumph of design in the culinary industry!
