Pacific Rim Bureau (CNSNews.com) - Most Muslims surveyed in a comprehensive poll do not believe Arabs carried out the Sept.11 attacks.

The Gallup poll of almost 10,000 Muslims in nine nations also found that most disapproved of the terror attacks, but an even larger number opposed the retaliatory U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan.

The majority also expressed a negative view of the U.S., and of President Bush.

In a survey the polling company said was "possibly the most challenging project in Gallup's history," researchers conducted in-person interviews during December and January with Muslims in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, Indonesia, Turkey, Lebanon, Kuwait, Jordan and Morocco.

Some of the results include:

- Sixty-one percent did not believe Arabs carried out the Sept. 11 attacks, while 18 percent said they had. (21 percent did not know.)
- Sixty-seven percent said the attacks were wrong, while nine percent said they were justified.
- Seventy-seven percent said the military action in Afghanistan was unjustified, while nine percent disagreed.
- Fifty-three percent held an unfavorable view of the U.S., while 22 percent did not.
- Fifty-eight percent expressed dislike for Bush, while 11 percent did not.

Of the nine countries whose citizens were polled, nationals of Pakistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia had the least favorable view of the U.S., while those of Lebanon and Turkey had the most favorable.

The U.S. holds Osama bin Laden, a Saudi national, responsible for masterminding the Sept. 11 attacks.

Of the 19 men identified as those who hijacked the airliners - which crashed into the World Trade Center, Pentagon and Pennsylvania - 15 were Saudis. Researchers say bin Laden's al Qaeda network is overwhelmingly Arab.
