Note: I really have to comment on this article
because it is full of half truths, omissions, and
minimalization of the truth about MTBE. On the other
hand that is typical for the San Francisco Chronicle,
a left-wing rag.
When
BJ Clinton was the Porno-President of the US he
appointed a radical enviro-nazi, Carol Browner, to be
in charge of the EPA. Carol Browner's astounding
ignorance of science combined with BJ's lack of
interest in the EPA set the stage for environmental
calamities completely caused by the beaurocrats who
will never be held responsible. BJ gave the whole EPA
department to AlGore who sold out to every
Enviro-Nazi organization who could bribe him.
The
people coming to AlGore and BJC and Carol also
included some non-enviro-nazi multi-national
corporations with very deep pockets. I am now
segueing into the oil companies. MTBE is an extremely
toxic byproduct of petroleum manufacture. It was used
in very small amounts, just 5%, only during the
winter in Alaska and the very cold north midwest
states to keep gasoline from gelling. It otherwise
was never added to gasoline for several reasons which
were well known to the oil companies. Specifically
ARCO, which holds the patent for MTBE. It was costly
to dispose of because of its extremely hazardous
qualities.
ARCO
came up with a plan that only a sociopath like BJC
and an ignorant, demogoging enviro-beauro-nazi would
ever fall for. ARCO was going to turn the MTBE from a
money loser to a money maker by making up a story
that if added to gasoline that it would clean up the
emissions. Carolyn Browner bought the lie and forced
it to be added to gasoline in most of the states
across the US. The oil companies were particularly
generous in their support of the DNC (Democrapic
National Committee) but also donated to the gutless
Republicraps to get them to go along with adding this
poison to YOUR gasoline using YOUR TAX MONEY.
Let's
now talk about what MTBE really
does. MTBE mixes with water completely and has a
similar boiling point. Once it combines with water it
can not be separated from it. A teaspoon is enough to
pollute a swimming pool enough to make it unusable
and kill fish. Just that much produces a toxic stench
bad enough to make it undrinkable. You can't even use
it to shower with or water your garden with. The
plants take it up into their tissues and concentrate
it. One town near Sacramento had to be completely
abandoned because the effluent from one gasoline
station polluted the main well for the town. The
property became worthless because it was
uninhabitable.
MTBE
is a powerful solvent. It is similar to Acetone and
Benzene in its ability to solubilize plastic and
rubber based products. It weakens hoses and seals in
the gasoline engine causing fires and gasoline leaks.
Underground storage tanks have been completely unable
to be designed to prevent this chemical from leaking
out. The cost of replacing these gas tanks, mandated
by the EPA beauro-nazis, has caused the near complete
extinction of proprieter owned gasoline stations in
California and many other states. This has left the
oil companies, ARCO, Shell, BP, and a few others with
a virtual monopoly on the sale of gasoline.
MTBE
in the water causes rashes, bloody noses, birth
defects, and various gastro-intestinal disturbances
including various cancers. MTBE in the exhaust of
vehicles causes severe asthma in people who normally
are not prone to this problem. The city of
Philadelphia noted a gigantic surge of asthma cases
right after the addition of MTBE into their fuels.
This was tracked by several doctors and presented to
the government in a petition to exempt their state
from having to use this poison. The
BJC/Browner/sociopath administration refused and
demonized the doctors and others who brought it to
the attention of the public.
The
MTBE leaked during the entire Clinton/Browner
administration and caused massive health problems.
The city of Santa Monica, California during the
mid-1990's was forced to shut down HALF of its water
wells because of MTBE contamination. Hippy-Radical
Tom Hayden, ex-husband of Communist Jane Fonda
originally backed the inclusion of MTBE into the
gasoline. When the truth of the water contamination
hit his city in the pocketbook he tried to act like
it was "the government's fault" when in
fact he couldn't bring himself to blame the Democraps
he loved. He had to bite the bullet and import
"state" water at an annual cost of $5
million per year that continues to this day!
MTBE
is so hydrophyllic that smog from coastal cities in
California has polluted pristine mountain lakes with
MTBE where literally no other source for this
pollutant existed. Boats using gasoline powered
engines were banned from lakes. Snowmobiles were
similarly affected as were motorcycles. Everything
was blamed except the problem, MTBE.
KSFO
Radio in San Francisco sponsored enormous
demonstrations at the California state capitol to try
to get it banned in I think 1995 and another a year
or two later. Pete Wilson, a Republicrap, was
governor then and refused to use his power as
governor to make MTBE be removed from California's
fuel supply. As a reward for his being a "useful
idiot" he and his wife and now employed by one
of the big oil companies. The Democrap/sociopath that
followed him, Gray Dufus, said grandly that he would
remove MTBE from the state's gas. Guess what, during
fundraising he forgot about it. Then fudged a year
later and said, "well, we wait a couple of years
before we remove it". Guess who is paying a big
chunk of his re-election expenses? Mr.
Environmentalist himself is a tool of the Big Oil
companies.
The
San Francisco Chronicle which produced this crappy
article that follows was a major booster of MTBE as
were all the left wing socialist media TV outlets.
They refused to publish valid research showing that
this was a dangerous poison. This went on for years
and only now, now that it's politically correct to
change their tune are they publishing timid articles
like this one. That's why you need to get your news
from the internet. The sources I have listed in my
website are honest and tell you the truth these
propaganda mongers controlling the mass media won't
